It is not service.

I will introduce the basics of OMOTENASHI.

Let’s learn it one by one.

It has seven principles.

茶は服のよきように
炭は湯の沸くように置き
夏は涼しく、冬は暖かに
花は野にあるように
刻限は早めに
降らずとも雨の用意
相客に心せよ
I will introduce the second until forth principle today.

 炭は湯の沸くように置き (sumi wa yu no waku yoni oki)

Prior to the ceremony, the master of ceremony must be prepared for the ceremony.

The meaning of this maxim is ‘First of all, we should check the core problem.
 In the tea ceremony, it uses charcoal when boiling water. It takes time to ignite charcoals.And the speed with which hot water boils will change at the position where the charcoal is placed.So we have to consider the time when we should boil the water and the charcoal position for customers to drink tea at the best time.We should be holding the point to become the cornerstone for preparation.It is difficult, so we can't do it completely, but we do it little by little.

 夏は涼しく、冬は暖かに (natsu wa suzushiku, fuyu wa atatakani)

Serve your guests in a way that matches the season.

The meaning of this maxim is 'Let’s make an effort to create a pleasant environment’.
 There are four seasons in Japan. Make a cool environment in the summer. Make a warm environment in the winter. For each season, we will make an environment where everybody can feel comfortable.

 花は野にあるように (hana wa noni aru yoni)

Feel the beauty and the dignity as it is.

The meaning of this maxim is 'Let’s preserve nature and honor life’.
It’s accepting life as it is. But it doesn’t mean that there will be no changes. It’s ensuring the beauty of the material. And then changing it for the better, to make it more beautiful.

Do you know what is OMOTENASHI?

It is not service.

OMOTENASHI reminds me of RIKYU-SHICHSOKU (利休七則).

It is a basic of OMOTENASHI.
Let’s learn it.

It has seven principles.

茶は服のよきように

I will introduce the first principle today.

茶は服のよきように (cha wa fuku no yoki yoni)

You will make matcha (green tea) in a moderate temperature and quantity that is easy for other people to drink. Let’s make Matcha with your soul. When you are making matcha, you must not forget other people.

For example:
When the host is making matcha, you must not forget the customer.
In the same way, when the customer is drinking the matcha that the host gave, they must thank him for making the delicious matcha.

Why do Japanese people say ITADAKIMASU?

Lately, Japanese doesn’t say ITADAKIMASU when eating in a restaurant but they know the meaning of ITADAKIMASU.

It has two meanings.
- being thankful (for the people who made and cooked the food)
- giving penance (for the living things who gave its life to be food)
However, I checked 頂く(ITADAKU) in Chinese character (Kanji). It has no meaning of being thankful and giving penance.

Why do Japanese people say ITADAKIMASU before eating something?

ITADAKIMASU

頂（ITADAKI) - means top of the mountain or top of the head.
ます(MASU) = polite phrase.

For long ago, People has offered food and drink to God everyday. Then They received it. At those time, they act like putting food on their head.

After that, the meaning changed gradually.
People now say 頂く(ITADAKU) when receiving something.
Then the word (MASU) was added to make it polite.

For example:
They say ITADAKIMASU when receiving items from great people, because it is considered that great people are in high places.

There are many countries who pray before eating.
That is mainly thanks to God.
Japanese people appreciate everything related to meals - living things and God. It is because life is precious. It was given by God.

When you what to say thanks, what should you say

You may say ARIGATO but I sometimes say SUMIMASEN. Why?
SUMIMASEN

It has two meanings, I’m sorry and Thank you.
It is used to express appreciation.
- to boss.
- Someone who have done something I have to do instead of me.

If you write すみません（SUMIMASEN) in Chinese Character (Kanji), it is 済みません（SUMIMASEN).
済む is the same source as 澄む
澄む means Be clear.
ません means NOT.
so it expresses that I don’t feel refreshed.

ARIGATO

it origin is 有り難し（ありがたし）.
有る（ARU） means being and exist.
難い（GATAI）means hard and difficult.
ARIGATO means ‘It is so rare and valuable’.
This is a word derived from Buddhism.

It is difficult to distinguish and differentiate these two words if you are not Japanese so I suggest that you can use both.
For example:
You were lost your pen and you borrowed a pen from your friend(co-worker).
In this case, You can say 'SUMIMASEN・ARIGATO’.

GOKIGENYO(ごきげんよう) is magic word.

When you will understand the meaning of GOKIGENYO, you will understand characteristics of Japanese.
Many Japanese has said from overseas that they arn’t efficient. But Is it so?
No! The Japanese are considerably more efficient.Japanese words are efficiently. I will introduce one of them.

Do you know GOKIGENYO?

GOKIGENYO is greeting
When it is written the chinese charactor, we write  '御機嫌好（良）う’.
御機嫌 = your body. 好う = good.
This mean ‘Is your body healthy?’ or  'How are you?’ It is used since the Muromachi era(since 1336).
**　It has many meanings in English **
English How are you. Nice to meet you. Good-bye. Take care. etc.
Japanese OHAYO(Good morning) KONNICHIWA(Good Afternoon) KONBANWA(Good evening).
Everyone don’t worry polite phrase.
GOKIGENYO is very polite.
Japanese greetings must be properly used according to people and places. However, GOKIGENYOU doesn’t need to choose priority and time for greeting.

What is the meaning of SAYONARA(さようなら)

There are many greetings. When I was young, I was taught that greetings are important. But I don’t understand so much why it is important. So I choose “SAYONARA” among them.
Nowadays, most Japanese people say Bye-Bye instead of
SAYONARA. It maybe because SAYONARA has a negative connotation so they don’t want to use it. That’s too bad.
Let’s discuss the importance of the greeting “SAYONARA”.
Well, It is a quiz. When do you use(say) SAYONARA? 
Yes, when you want to say goodbye.

SAYONARA

Its origin is from the word SAYOUNARABA (左様ならば). It means “In that case”. Everyone accepts to part sorrowfully from each other because one of them is leaving. They have no choice but to say goodbye since one of them has to go.

Bye-bye

Bye-bye is a shortened version of GoodBye. Goodbye originated from the expression “Good be with ye”. It means “May God be with you”. This is praying for the other’s safety.

SAYONARA has emotion that I want to talk more with you.
Japanese had good communication skills, right?
